IS THE SUCH A THING AS A RULER LINE

I have working on a excile and word documents and have trouble following on
the lines. I have seen programs in which you can a ruler that runs down and
across so you know where you are in the document. I was wondering if there
is such a thing in microsoft and if so how do you activate it. Any hel p
would be great. Thank you, Cathy
