Is there a global default template setting?

I'm not sure if I am doing this correctly, so here it goes.

The problem is that if I change the default template I had set by section
all the sections loose the default template setting. (I had previously saved
template ABC as a custom template and set all the sections to use ABC as the
default template. I later changed the ABC template and re-saved it. Now all
sections are back to the no default template setting.) Is there a way of
changing a template without having to set again all the default templates in
the sections?

Better yet, is there a way of changing the default template globally? If
there is no way, then the comment is a suggestion for new functionality.
