Is there a limit on filename size for Word

Hi!

I am using Microsoft Word X for Mac Service Release 1. When I try to
save a file longer than 31 characters, it tells me: "The file name you
entered is too long. The file name cannot exceed 31 characters.
Enter a shorter file name and try saving again."

I don't have this same problem when I use Office XP on a Windows XP
computer, so I'm not sure if the problem is with the Office X version
that runs on Mac or if the problem is with my version of Mac. I am
running a G5 with OS X 10.3.3 with all of the latest security updates.

If there is an option to allow longer file names, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Office v.X can generate a filename of 31 or fewer characters. However,
if you open a file with a long filename, or if you rename the file in
the Finder, Office v.X will not change the filename unless you choose
File/SaveAs (the filename will display as the first characters + a hash,
but that's only the display).

Office 2004 can generate long filenames (255 characters).

Thank you for the feedback, JE. Very much appreciated.
