Visio has only one file format and the extension tells Visio how to open the
file. The inside of a Visio file can be broken down into two major portions;
the drawing(s) and the stencil. If you open a file as a drawing, you see the
drawing and the stencil shows as the document stencil. When you open as a
stencil you see the stencil portion, but not the drawings. So the limits to
a stencil are similar to the limits as a drawing.
So when creating the drawing, did you copy your drawing to the stencil
portion of the file? Just to make sure we are talking the same terms; the
drawing contains shapes and the stencil is a collection of master shapes.
It is possible to create a drawing without saving any shapes.
