Is there a PRINT QUALITY option on the print menu for Panther?

D

Darci O.

I am running mac osX with Panther and my version of Word is X for Mac. I don't see a print option for "quality" on the print dialog box. How do you print "best" quality on photo paper, or low quality using "draft"? This wasn't a problem with Jaguar. If this is not an option for Panther, is there a fix? Please help!

It might depend on your printer. When I go to print, it is under
"Printer Features" which is one of the lumps of magic hiding under the
drop down menu on the print panel which is usually saying "Copies and
Pages" when you first eye it off.

Thanks Elliott, but i don't see a "printer features" button, and when i used
Jaguar it was under that sub-menu previously. Not sure what's up with
Panther though. My printer is an HP Officejet G85.
Ah, well it is there in mine. Panther changed its printing machinery
rather drastically. In my unfairly jaundiced view, all printer problems
are hp's fault. As a first attempt I'd rummage about on hp's site for
up-to-date drivers. Look for CUPS related stuff.
Sorry I cannot be more use.

Thanks, good advice, but what is "CUPS"?
"Common Unix Printing System"
It should "just work"
When it does not, it is a scary beast.
See how you go with searching hp's sites for the latest drivers and
seeing how far you get with print utility. Come back if you still have
trouble and we'll see if we can fake it out.

Wanna be more informed/scared?

Navigate to one of these two equivalent URLs in your favorite browser:

http://127.0.0.1:631

or

http://localhost:631/documentation.html

You should be looking at an entry point to more than you ever want to know
about CUPS.

For what it is worth, I've bookedmarked this help system, but never actually
needed to use it. My network printer worked under System 9 and --without
any significant effort-- has continued to work under System X. Woo-hoo!

Yeah, I agree, make sure you've got the latest drivers.

Thanks,

Henry

Now you have blown it! I was going to break it to Darci gently ;-)

Sorry! I guess that means I¹ve volunteered to help.

First, unfortunately, it looks like the G85 has been discontinued by HP. HP
usually is pretty good about continuing some kind of support for a while, in
my experience.

In fact, at

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?product=60399&cc=us&lc=en&dl
c=&os=219

You can see a Mac version 6.3.7 for MacOS X dated 2004-03-15. They want
about $10.00 to ship you the CDROM it seems or you can download it, all 42
megabytes if you are patient and/or have a high-bandwidth connection.

There¹s a forum provided by HP to answer issues about multifunction,
copiers & fax products, which seems to include the G85. See

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/familyhome.do?familyId=228

I just posted about a completely different issue on one of these message
boards and received two pretty reasonable replies within about 20 minutes.

I downloaded the G85 manual, bpu03162.pdf. Unfortunately all of what I see
is relevant to System 9. I did see in the print dialog ³print quality² set
to ³normal² so I presume there¹s a place, probably in the Page Setup menu or
hiding behind it, to make adjustments.

Have I paid my debt to society?

Thanks,

Henry
