Is there a virus that types random phrases in Microsoft Word?

D

Dan Bernard

Has anyone encountered a virus that behaves like the following? I had a
Microsoft Word document open that I had created and had edited for several
hours. Suddenly random phrases started being typed letter by letter in the
document without my touching a key. They included phrases such as "in the
movie in the movie" and phrases I have never typed, such as "my relations
with the IRS." It kept spewing them out so I had to shut down.

I may have been online at the time. In recent months, Norton anti-virus has
reported that it has blocked incomnig Trojan horse viruses.

Norton anti-virus did not detect a virus in the Word document, neither when
I ran the (updated) version on my computer, nor when I uploaded it to Yahoo.
A full scan of my computer with (updated) Norton found nothing.
PestPatrol found nothing on my computer either.
When I opened the same file later, the problem did not replicate.
Creepy.
Has anyone heard of such a thing? How can I protect against it?

If you have a microphone attached to your computer, try turning
off or disconnecting the mic. Or try turning off the speech
recognition feature in Word/Office as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823586 "How to turn off the
speech recognition and the handwriting recognition features in
Office 2003".
