Is there a way I can track home inventory (grocery) by barcode?

I shop grocery shop just once a month. One of the tools I use is a recipe
program that permits me to make menu plans. From the menu plans the program
will generate a shopping list.

It also permits me to build a home inventory base of everything in my
cupboards, pantry, freezer and refrigerator. I am at the stage, now, of
entering inventory information, a very time consuming job.

I can see that managing inventory is going to be the problem, not only as I
bring new items into the house, but as it gets used.

I want to be able to scan, by barcode, both what I purchase and what I use
instead of enter the information by hand.

I know nothing about barcode - it just seems that it would be very useful to
be able to use in the home application. Does anyone know if there is now a
way to do this, and where I would learn more about it?

It seems barcode could be very helpful, even at home, for all home
inventory. For insurance records, for keeping track of when something was
purchased, and probably more than I am thinking of now.

Any help for the barcode impaired out there?

Bar code reading is easy, you can buy a scanner for a few bucks.
But a bar code is just that, a code; you still need the retail database
behind it to identify what the item is.
There are on-line services, but they cost to access; you could create and
maintain it yourself, but that would be a full time job; or you could spend
the time getting out more!
