Is there a way to lock "normal.dot"

Hi,

I assume that my problems with numbering of chapters, headings,
subheadings arise from a normal.dot that accept changes "in the
flight". Even documents that have been correct before have now
incorrect numberings.

Thanks for all help

Your assumption is incorrect. See this article by MVP Shauna Kelley. Word's
numbering prior to W2007 progressively worsened by each release. Verdict is
still reserved on W2007, but initially it seems infinitely better - as yet I
haven't had the opportunity to test this on a complex Legal Numbered
template, but other aspects look favorable.

Thanks Terry,

the initial numbering I have done with Shauna's description. Then I
have pasted both from external and the document.
Something happened, my numberings disappeared. I have rearranged
according to Shauna's description and it was OK about 1 month. Now the
same happened, the numbering disappeared or come back wrong ,se above.
I know now that it is not normal.dot, but what can i do to avoid this
problem?
I use Word 2003, shall look for 2007.
