Is there a way to move a cross referenced source, and still work?

Hello.

I am using word 2007. I have a sizable document, that has a references
section that lists all of the references for the document.

At various places in the document I have cross-references to the items in my
reference list (i.e. see ref[7], etc.)

My problem is, I don't like where my Reference section is located in the
document. Its currently section 16, and I want to move it be section 18.
However, whenever I move the text, it breaks all of the existing cross
references.

Where by breaking, I mean, after updating all references:
1. The cross references to the moved section change from their original
value to '1.'
2. The cross references to the moved section all point to the old page,
where the 'Reference' section USE to be.

I have tried the following to move my "Refererences" section:
1. I have cut and pasted it from page 38 to 53.
2. I have tried selecting the section on page 38 and dragging and dropping
to page 53.

In both cases, the cross references in the document are now broken.

How have you created the cross-references, are they to Bookmarks or a
Numbered Items? Moving Bookmarks and/or the cross-references should not have
the effect you are describing.
Have you tried using Outline View to do the moving?
View tab, Document Views group, Outline.
See the following article, which has not been updated for 2007 but the
essence is the same.
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/usingolviewcontent.htm
Basically, showing only the Heading 1 level, either move Section 16 down to
become Section 18 or move up the other two sections.
All the links should remain.
I am sure you are doing so, but work on a copy of your document, just in
case ;-)

Also see the following article that has useful tips about X-ref and the
possible problems that can occur.

Hope this helps

Hello Dean,

The cross references are to numbered items.

I tried using the Outline View and it worked, although, to be honest I don't
know if it solved the problem because priore to receiving your response I
went through and deleted all of the problematic cross references and re-added
them.

Thanks for the tip on outline view.

I know of the other page for cross reference problems. It did not cover my
issue.

Thanks for the feedback.
