Is there a way to turn off the autonumber

Dave

When I pull the cell downward, excel auto numbers.

If the first cell has 1

then the next cell will get 2 and so on.

Can this be turned off?

Thanks

I don't get this with Excel 97, 2002 or 2003.

If I enter 1 and drag down I get a series of 1's

If I enter 1 and 2 in adjacent cells and drag down I get sequenced numbers.

Do you have a custom list of numbers under Tools>Options>Custom Lists?

Work-around........right-click and drag then release and select "Copy Cells"

Fill in a series of numbers, dates, or other items
Select the first cell in the range you want to fill, and then enter the
starting value for the series.
To increment the series by a specified amount, select the next cell in the
range and enter the next item in the series. The difference between the two
starting items determines the amount by which the series is incremented.

Select the cell or cells that contain the starting values.

Drag the fill handle over the range you want to fill.
To fill in increasing order, drag down or to the right.

To fill in decreasing order, drag up or to the left.

To specify the type of series, use the right mouse button to drag the fill
handle over the range, and then click the appropriate command on the shortcut
menu. For example, if the starting value is the date JAN-2002, click Fill
Months for the series FEB-2002, MAR-2002, and so on; or click Fill Years for
the series JAN-2003, JAN-2004, and so on.

To manually control how the series is created, or use the keyboard to fill
in a series, use the Series command.

Create linear and growth trends with the Series command
When you use the Series command, the resulting series replaces the original
selected values. To save the original values, copy them to a different row or
column. Then create the series by selecting the copied values.

Select the cell where you want to start the series. The cell must contain
the first value in the series.

On the Edit menu, point to Fill, and then click Series.

Do one of the following:
To fill the series down the page, click Columns.

To fill the series across the page, click Rows.

In the Step value box, enter the value that you want to increase the series
by. In a linear series, the step value is added to the first starting value
and then added to each subsequent value. In a growth series, the first
starting value is multiplied by the step value. The resulting product and
each subsequent product is then multiplied by the step value.

Hi,
When I do it, a comment box appears. i click it and it
offers options on the fill data. I can have data series or
just a lot of ones. Also Formatting options. I do not know
how to stop it from showing though.

Is it possible you have a macro? Check your modules through VB editor. Is
this a new book or existing book. You can also try on other workbooks and see
if this is happening on other books. Most interesting problem....
