Is there a way to update figure numbers automatically?

I was wondering if there was a solution for updating figure numbers automatically. If I have a document that has 48 figures in it and need to insert a new figure in between figures 12 and 13, I need to manually re-number 13-48. Is there a way to set this up so that the numbers can update automatically?
