Is there a way to use the "highlighter" on a scanned document?

Please use this big white space to give us more details. Is your scanned
document a picture or text (processed with OCR)?

It is a picture of a page of text. Not OCR generated text. Thankyou for
responding. I tried drawing a box around the text and filling that with
yellow, however, unless there is a way to move the fill color into the
background, I couldn't make this work. I am unfamiliar with using OCR and I
am not sure if I have that available here to use with my scanner. It does
appear that the normal "highlighter" tool only works with text, not images,
but thought I would ask just in case there was a way to make the highlighter
work with images or if there were an alternative way to do highlighting of
"text" in an image.

It depends on your version of Word [always specify that] as to whether this
will work or not but you are on the right track with the rectangle idea.

Right-click the rectangle, select Format Auto Shape & on the Colors & Lines
page adjust the Transparency to an acceptable %.

Thankyou. Yes, I have Word 2003. I did try the Transparency adjustment.
The effect I saw was only that the yellow highlighting became more washed out
and blended with the underlying "text". I did not get the effect I was
looking for which was to put the yellow highlighting in the background and
allow the underlying text image to be in the foreground.

Yeah, I didn't figure that was going to give you the preferred result but it
was worth a try :) The only other way that "might" work better is to use
the Set Transparent Color tool from the Picture toolbar to click the white
area of the scan. Create your "highlight rectangles" then Send to Back.

If the user converts the scan to a .tif --- the highlighter pens in the Document
Imaging program are very good.
