Is there another way to insert page numbers?

Even with a 17" MacBook Pro, I try never to use the Formatting Palette because it takes up too much screen real estate. However, I've found with the new Word that I must use it to insert page numbers into the header as normal for me when taking notes (i.e., a word or phrase left-justified followed immediately by the page number, like "Book Title 1"), since "Insert>Page Number" only allows me to add absolutely positioned page numbers. I seem to remember that the previous version opened a floating Header and Footer pallete when you access the header, then closed it when you returned to the body of the document. Is it possible to recreate that behavior in Word 2008?

Well, your recollection is "partially" correct, but not about the Insert>
Page Numbers... command. That method works identically in 2008 as it did in
2004. That command, however, doesn't put you into the H/F in either version
of the program... But I'm not sure what you mean by ""Insert>Page Number"
only allows me to add absolutely positioned page numbers". That command
generates a small dialog which offers the choice of having the page number
in the H or F, L-C-R alignment in either, whether to display on 1st page, as
well as a Format button. Perhaps its the fact that the pg # field is being
inserted into a Frame that's causing the confusion.

You can't change that behavior but you can then dbl-click the Frame border &
click the Remove Frame button. You can then press Home or click to enter
content to the left of the pg # code.

Alternatively, you may prefer to insert the page field code manually...
After you go into the Header & type your text press Command+F9 to insert
Field Braces, type the word PAGE between the braces & use Option+F9 to
toggle the Field Code off.

What's different is if you use View> Header & Footer or double-click the H/F
area, and in 2008 the H/F toolbar is indeed gone. As for the Toolbox
(Formatting Palette), I've found it to be quite convenient, If you aren't
aware of it you can click the bent arrow button on the right end of its
Title Bar & set it to collapse or turn transparent after a predetermined
period of inactivity, as well as some other useful options. Keeping it
Docked beneath the Menu Bar in the upper right corner of the screen makes it
quite unobtrusive. Additionally you can assign a keystroke to the
ToggleOfficeToolbox command to turn it on/of as needed.

This Header and Footer toolbar is no longer there in Word 2008, as CyberTaz
has pointed out, but it is now part of the Formatting Palette. If you place
the cursor in the header or footer section and open the FP, you should have
access to all the options available in the toolbar in Word 2004 and earlier.
