The Windows Fax Service is an optional installation from the Windows XP CD.
You must either have a snalog modem and a regular telephone line or a
splitter for the DSL to allow for telephone calls to be made when using DSL.
You cannot fax using cable or DSL, period.

After furious head scratching, XS11E asked:

|| I heard there is a fax installed on Microsoft XP but I can't find
|| it in my software CD's.
|
| There is fax software available. It is NOT installed by default in XP
| Home but it's on the CD, can't recall where? It is available in XP
| Pro.
|
|| I use DSL and we can't figure out how to use our Microsoft 98 Fax
|| program with the DSL.
|
| You MUST have a fax modem to use the fax applet, you can install a 56k
| modem and use is for faxing even if you have DSL or cable modem.
|
| If you don't have a modem or don't want one, there are online fax
| services but AFAIK they are not free?
|
| FWIW, dedicated FAX machines are available very cheaply, around $40 on
| sale which isn't too much more than buying a modem.
