Word 2002 with Excel Data Source
I've seen a number of postings about this - PLEASE HELP!!!
I want to save a mail merge main document with a filter
applied so that I can always print selected labels from my
Excel Data Source. This was no problem in Word 2000.
In Word 2002, when you try to reopen the file you have to
find the data source again. I've tried using the old Mail
Merge Helper but it seems that this is not working the
same as before ie you don't automatically get the screen
come up to edit the main document.
This is so frustrating and I can't find a solution
anywhere. Have I missed something?

Try putting your Excel data source in the sub folder of My Documents called
My Data Sources.

After you've created your mail merge and reopen it, it
ought to display an information window saying "Data from
your database will be placed in the document. Do you
want to continue." This message means it's linked to
your Excel, so once you click "Yes" and open your labels
all of your previous filtering ought to be there (that is
if you saved it last time of course), then on the Mail
Merge toolbar, click the 3rd button from the left
called "Mail Merge Recipients," and that will always open
up your Data Source for advanced Filters or Sorting.

If you're not getting the "information" window then I
suspect a repair is in order for Word XP. Also, it's
only good to have one version of Word on your computer; I
don't know if you still have Word 2000 & Word XP. I know
some programs in Office aren't good children and don't
get along with other version i.e. Excel 2000 hates Excel
XP and 2003 when it comes to macros and you're lucky to
get any macro to run correctly for too long. I hope this
helps.

Thanks for your reply.
I've never seen the "Data from your database will be
placed in the document" window.
I'm reloading the software so I'll get back to you.

I'm sure that Kirt means well, but a few of his responses have been a bit
wide of the mark.

Kirt -

I've just realised (sorry about this) that the excel
document had a macro...
I disabled it on setting up the mail merge, then Enabled
it when I reopened the filtered main document. Wow what a
journey this has been but success at last!
Thankyou for your advice - the elusive window now appears!
