is this a Word shortcut of some sort?

Suzanne,

It is part of the keyboard vice mouse process to apply the
small cap font. ALT+o opens the format menu>f opens the
font dialog box>ALT+m applies small cap effect.

There is a direct keyboard shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+K to apply
the small cap font effect. You can easily change the
shortuct to something else with
View>Toolbars>Customize>Toolbars>Keyboard. Find the small
cap command and go from there.

In the font dialogue box, in the effects section...the m
in "Small Caps" is underlined...is this some sort of
shortcut? If so, how do I use it rather than go to the
fonts dialogue box via menus?

I use small caps a lot more often than hyperlinks, so I swapped the keyboard
shortcuts--use Ctrl+K for small caps and Ctrl+Shift+K for hyperlinks. I've
also got a Small Caps button on my Formatting toolbar (along with All Caps,
Double Underline, and Strikethrough).
