ISO information on developing templates for Word

I'm trying to develop some templates and am looking for information to
increase my understanding of them.

When you create mailing labels using the 'envelopes and labels' wizard, you
are given an opportunity to set the font, line spacing, etc. before the
document is created. But what if you'd like to change it after you have the
document? Is there a way to redefine the template, say making the changes on
the first label and then have the changes propagate throughout?

Another exampled would be if the labels contained an image, and you wanted
to swap it for another one.

I think what I'm trying to understand is if there is any sort of
'programmatic' aspect to them? I guess ideally what I'd like to do is
something like the following:
1) create a document with a table
2) defined some sort of 'objects' which contain their content and how they
are displayed (font, color, etc.)
3) instances of the object are contained in the table
4) The user then updated the object with their own text, images, etc. They
can change the font, color, etc. and the changes affect every instance of the
object in the document.

Can you do this sort of thing with templates? If not, is there some other
place I should be looking?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!
