Issue opening an .rtf in Word:Mac 2008

Hi, I'm trying to open an .rtf in Word. When I try to open it, I get the option to convert the file. I select Rich Text Format and click OK. At which time I get an error that says, "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might not be a valid Word document."

Help! Please?

Are you sure it IS an RTF file?

That error message is pretty reliable: one or other of those conditions is
usually true.

Try a reboot: sometimes the OS does not "release" the file correctly, so
Word thinks it is in use.
