issue with initializing root folders

Upon installing the latest office update, MS word started to misbehave: every
time I want to open or save any document in word, the application starts
displaying a window stating "initializing root folders". This takes about 1
minute beyond which one is led to the next layer of folders in word, and so
on until you actually get to the final layer of folders which contains the
actual document. It is beyond a pain and takes forever.
Does anyone have a solution on how to fix this?

Do you have a drive mapped to a network share that isn't currently
available? If so, try disconnecting the mapped drive.
