Issue with right-to-left language formatting

O

I'm having an issue with text formatting in Word 2003 and 2007.

I'm working on a manuscript with someone from Israel. The Word document
they sent me is a bit buggy, and I am guessing it's from right-to-left
language support. I have opened the document on 5+ computers, using
both Word 2003 and Word 2007 and cannot fix the issue.

Basically, regular document text will type fine. However, if I am
adding a comment (using the Review pane) the text will sometimes switch
to right-to-left. This is triggered by the use of ANY punctuation. At
first it was incredibly annoying, but now it is impossible to use.

I am using EndNote to manage my references. As I 'write-and-cite',
EndNote automatically generates a bibliography for me. The issue is
that the bibliography is ALSO bugged with the 'right-to-left' plague
(see attachment).

Interestingly, if I highlight the automically generated bibliography
and paste it into an unformatted text box (such as Notepad or a web
input box) the bibilography appears as it should. For example:

1. Russel MG. Changes in the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease:
what does it mean? Eur J Intern Med 2000;11:191-196.
2. Koutroubakis I, Manousos ON, Meuwissen SG, et al. Environmental risk
factors in inflammatory bowel disease. Hepatogastroenterology
1996;43:381-93.

However, if I paste into another Word document or into Wordpad, the
numbers (1, 2, etc) appear on the right side of the text.

I am desperate for any help with this issue as the deadline for
submission is approaching.

Kind regards,
Omid

Is there any Hebrew at all in the document?

The easiest thing to try is to select the entire document (Ctrl-A) and
go to Set Language (Tools in 03, Review in 07) and make sure it's set
to some variety of English.

If that doesn't work, you could select the entire document EXCEPT the
final paragraph mark, Copy, and Paste into a New document.

I've no idea how EndNote might interact with r-to-l languages.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I've tried that (and tried again)
and it doesn't work. The language is set to US English as default, and
always has been. There is no Hebrew that I can see in the document,
although somewhere in the backend of the document there must be a buggy
code Microsoft is carrying.

Something I would try just in case is:
a. ensure a RTL script language (e.g. Hebrew) was enabled in Office
Language settings
b. close all Office applications if the language settings tool doesn't
do it for you
c. open Word, locate the LTR/RTL paragraph direction buttons (in Word
2007 they are in the Home tab, Paragraph group - in 2003 I thin they are
in one of the two standard toolbars.
d. select the whole document and click the LTR button
