Issues upgrading from Office 2003 trial to full product

After performing a full recovery on my PC I have re-installed the Office 2003
Small Business Edition trial that came pre-installed on my machine. This
trial allows me to upgrade to the full product using the 2003 Small Business
Edition Upgrade. I have been successfully using this combination for over two
years.
After clicking the convert button and typing in my full product key I have
been receiving the 'Setup cannot locate a previous version of Office on your
machine' message regardless of the drive locations I select.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled the trial and the disc/update version but
still no luck. Furthermore, when I now click the convert button I no longer
get the option to type in the product key, instead the 'maintainance mode'
window opens.
I have had problems updating/activating using this method in the past but
managed to get it to work. Not this time...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A trial version is not a qualifying version for an upgrade, perhaps you had
Works or similar previously installed?

As I specified, this trial definately does qualify for the upgrade product &
pricing.

A trial version does not, and has never has qualified, as an upgrade path
A Trial can be converted to a working installation if you purchase a retail
key.
If you previously installed an upgrade version you must have had a
qualifying product, & to reiterate a trial is not one.
