Issues with "Files being Lock"

K

koz

I really can not figure this one out. I did some maintenance and now, some
users can not "delete, rename" files. it states, file being used by another
person or program. The Server is Windows 2003 Sp2, Patch list is below. I
remember checking the list for any problems, there was none. The server Has
virus scan Mcafee 8i patch 16 with the lastest Dats. The Clients are
running Fat32 ,XPsp2 ,and the server is NTFS. My boss is thinking "patch"
issue or virus. I am freaking out. Help would be nice. thanks koz

Hi Koz:

You are unlikely to get a sensible answer in here, this group is dedicated
to Microsoft Office problems on Macintosh computers.

My first thought is that upgrading those clients to NTFS is a good idea:
modern applications are likely to disapprove of FAT32 file systems :)

I have cross-posted this to microsoft.public.windows.server.networking,
where you are likely to get a far more informed response :)

Cheers

Hi Koz:

Our Windows Admins are asking you to get a report from FileMon so they have
more information to go on.

Obtain FileMon from the SysInternals website:

http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=filemon+sysinternals&ie=
UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Cheers

John,

I will be waiting:)

Thanks for all your help,

Hi Koz:

This is from Ken Schaefer, a Windows System Architect and MVP:

I assume that the clients are attempting to manipulate files on the server
via a CIFS/SMB share (a typical shared folder)?

If so he can use handle.exe (available from the Microsoft website - it's a
former Sysinternals tool) to see if there are any processes on the server
that actually have handles/locks on the files in question.

I'd also verify the Share-level and NTFS permissions on the files in
question.

Cheers
Ken

I have the same issue here almost to the letter. Found that it seemed to
stem from Mcafee On-Access Scan. Somehow it appears to lock files...maybe as
it scans them. I was seeing it with access databases; the .ldb file would
not delete after the user closed the database but with the scan off it worked
as it should have. Once the files were locked the only way I could unlock
them was to reboot the server. I will be trying to upgrade my version of
Mcafee to see if it fixes it.

Hope this helps.

Virus scanners and Entourage:

Some AV products identify a virus within the database and puts your database
into quarantine. You will need to read the directions on how to release.

Check any AV products you are running and, if necessary, exclude the
Microsoft User Data folder from their scans.

ClamXav has an option to move infected files to trash . Be sure to uncheck
this.

Hello,

as an Update to this problem.

from the parent folder, files are placed in it, these files can not be
renamed or deleted, but if the file is copies to a child folder below the
parent, you can delete and rename the file. you can not cut the file from the
parent to the child, it must be copied. Parent and child folder permissions
are the same.

Company is the testing the old server. Local Admin took owner ship, we
upgraded to 8.5(8i has issues with this). Nothing happened. I removed
backup software agent, did not workfrom the old server. BUT I gave the
permission to local Administrator to have full control and was able to rename
the files. I tried this on the production server. it dd not work.

any ideas?
