"Italian grammar module" crashing Word?

S

Slipface

Gang,
I have a document that I created in the previous version of Word, that
I am now revising in the current version. The document is only 43
pages long but it has a fair amount of formatting including over 300
endnotes (Word endnotes, not those by the external "Endnote" software),
and a handful of black & white graphics.

It has crashed at least 10 times today, often while I'm not even
actively doing anything with the document. I tried saving it as the
current docx format and it still crashes.

In the additional info that comesup in the crash report it refers to an
Italian language module. I'm not using any Italian language features
(so far as I know--it's just the default settings, whatever they may
be).

Here is the first page of the crash log:

Error Signature:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS
Date/Time: 2008-08-12 19:07:31 -0700
Application Name: Microsoft Word
Application Bundle ID: com.microsoft.Word
Application Signature: MSWD
Application Version: 12.1.1.080522
Crashed Module Name: ItalianGrammar
Crashed Module Version: 12.0.0
Crashed Module Offset: 0x000018ff
Blame Module Name: ItalianGrammar
Blame Module Version: 12.0.0
Blame Module Offset: 0x000018ff
Application LCID: 1033
Extra app info: Reg=en Loc=0x0409

Any ideas on how to fix this? This document is essentially impossible
for me to work on, short of saving it after each and every word I type
in it, and it's critical that I get to working on it ASAP.

TIA!
Dennis

Hi Dennis:

Somewhere in the document you have a "language" of Italian set.

Whenever the Proofing Engine (Spelling, Grammar) sees it, it will call the
Italian grammar checker.

You can use Find to search for a Language of Italian. If there is not
supposed to be any Italian in your document, you can simply apply the
correct language over the top.

That should fix it.

A document that complex which has been edited may be corrupt (is likely to
be corrupt!).

If you save the document as a .docx, that should fix it. If not, create a
new blank document, copy all except the last paragraph mark, and paste it
into the new document. Save under a different file name.

If you do this, eye-ball the document carefully: whatever was bad will now
have been omitted: check to see what you have lost. It may not be visible,
but it pays to check.

Cheers

Thanks, John. I found a very tiny piece of text in the endnotes that
had Italian formatting. Not sure why, but it's now fixed. Will see if
that does the trick.

I had already tried saving as .docx. It does seem to last longer
without crashing but it still crashes. If the language change doesn't
fix things I'll try the copy/paste method.

So does this mean that there is a bug in the Italian language part of
Word? You'd think that there would be a huge tech support nightmare
from Italy by now...

As always, thanks for your feedback!

After changing the snippet of Italian text to US English, it hasn't
crashed in about 10 minutes, which is far longer than it was lasting
yesterday. Fingers are crossed that this is the end of the crash-fest.

Still wonder if the folks who actually need Italian formatting are
experiencing this...

Thanks again, John.

Hi Dennis:

I believe that if you have "Italian" set as the OS System Language, it won't
crash. At least: It won't crash on "Italian".

But yes, there are some nasty bugs with the proofing tools, and I don't know
why they are taking so long to get them fixed!

Cheers
