Items do not appear in box immediately

Exchange 2000 server as part of SBS2000, mixture of Outlook 2000, XP, & 2003.
On occasion, a user will report that new messages do not appear in the Inbox
until the user clicks on another folder, then back on the Inbox; or the user
will report that items appear to stay in the Outbox (based on the unread
message count by the icon) until the user clicks on the Outbox.

Why? How to fix?

If the operating system of choice is Windows XP (SP2) and the Windows
firewall is on, then you need to set a firewall exception for Outlook
2000/XP binary (outlook.exe) so that it can open a listening port. For
Outlook 2003, it should automatically switch over to polling the server
every minute once it realizes it is being blocked by the Windows firewall.

Other than that, what you describe is normal when something blocks UDP
network packets between Exchange and the Outlook client. (The port is
always different, its UDP, it is always >= 1024, and it is always server to
client.) For more info, search for
