Hi

I've lost menus items on the top menu bar, edit, view etc and can't figure
out how to get them back.

Thanks, Rafael

one way:

If you still have the Tools menu, choose Tools/Customize/Customize
Toolbars/Menus... (I assume you have Word 2004, since you didn't
specify).

Select the Menu Bar item in the Toolbars panel, so that the whole line
is highlighted (not just the checkbox checked). Click Reset. Click Ok.

Alternatively:

Type Opt-F11 to enter the Visual Basic Editor. Type CMD-g to open the
Immediate Window. In the Immediate Window, type or paste

Commandbars(1).Reset

and hit Return. Type Opt-F11 to return to Word.

Two other ways to get into the Customize dialog if the Tools menu is among
the missing & you're hesitant to mess with even simple code:

1- If the View menu is present go to View>Toolbars>Customize Toolbars/Menu,
or
2- Click the black triangle at the right end of any toolbar & select
Customize Toolbars/Menu from there.

Thanks to McGimpsey and Cypertaz,

Yes. I have Word 2004

I used McGimpsey's first suggestion and it worked. I had never lost access
to Customize.

Before, I had gone through Customize and Word Help time and again trying to
figure out how to fix the problem. Highlighting and resetting I would never
have figured out. Also, I thought that by resetting I would lose all the
Customized commands I had carefully put in my toolbars and menus. They
remained, and Edit and View returned.

Thanks again,

Rafael

Hi Rafael,

You *do* lose customizations to your toolbars when you reset them. But you
probably hadn't customized the Menu Bar itself, had you? Most people don't.
They customize the Standard toolbar or the Formatting toolbar or their own
Custom toolbar.

P.S. to J.E. Rafael *did* state in his OP that he's in Word 2004. We have
him well trained :).
