I hope you didn't purchase Access because you thought that there would be a
template to point and click your way to any kind of business application you
wanted and that the templates would be a combination of exactly the
functions you wanted to combine in one database. As you see, that is just
not the case.

The templates provided by Microsoft are for generating rather simple,
straightforward Access database applications. Sounds as if you want an
application to run an entire business. Have you taken a look at the
Northwind Traders example database that comes with Access? It seems closer
to what you want than any template I have seen.

The reason you don't find templates is that there is no business model to
make it worthwhile for developers to produce them. Microsoft produces some
to promote use of the product. And, because it's more work to create a
template, and less instructive for the users, most developers who create
free samples or examples create applications rather than templates.

A company called Database Creations, which used to have a product with the
eye-catching name of "Yes, I can run my business with Access" has a number
of business applications which singly, or in combination, might get you
started. I have not used any of these, so don't take this as a
"recommendation", just as a "pointer" to where you can review what they say
about them: http://www.databasecreations.com. MVP Tony Toews has a
comparision of several accounting packages at his site,

If you're wanting to learn Access you've started with a very complex
project. Not impossible but if you have no experience with Access you
could spend weeks if not months developing the requested databases.

On the other hand if you're just wanting to have these things to help run
your business I would suggest a pre-packaged program such as Quickbooks.
It has all the things you want and more. Since it is commonly used many
accounting firms are familiar with it and it's usually pretty easy to find
someone to help you get started. Depending on your needs you can get
Quickbooks Pro for about $200 - $400. The really nice thing is you
can start using it the day you get it.

And, of course, the question is WHY would you want one database to do both
Product inventory AND Employees Payroll? Why not simply have two DBs? Much
easier to handle, especially the first time out of the shoot for you! With a
project this big and with you apparently having no programming experience, I
expect gls858's suggestion would perhaps be the way to go. I think Quickbooks
Pro would probably provide the tools you need and be much easier and quicker
to set up.

Wait! it isn't as difficult as you all are making it sound! I am NOT a
computer genius but i do know that access has a wizard that makes it almost a
no brainer! using the wizard you will be given choices of different tables to
store your information & for each table you are given choices of different
fields. it also guides you through the process of linking the tables in a
way that makes sense. Once you have your tables in place there is a forms
wizard. Access also lets you make forms using information you already have
saved in excel. you can also watch the training videos online and ask
questions using the "help" while you are in the program! start by writing
down each type of information you will be storing in your database
(name, employee #, etc) and know exactly what each form will include and it
will be a lot easier. I love access, the first time i used it i was very
unsure but between the wizards and the help i made my way. : )

Which just goes to show you don't know much about Access or the
processes your trying to program. But hey, you have to learn sometime.
Take a whack at it and if you have specific questions you can most
likely get help here, but I doubt very highly if anyone will design your
data base for you.
