Japanese characters showing up

Here's one for you all.

The upper and left boarder of MS Project is grey in
color. The information where one can type information is
white.

When I open a particular project, I see what appears to be
single Japanese characters in the left hand grey colored
section of each line. You cannot change this
information. When I put the mouse over one of these
characters, the Work hours show up in a little yellow box
next to my mouse pointer. There's other screwy things in
the view which opens up as well. I cannot 'locate' this
view if I change views, and try to go back to it.

This project has been constantly crashing as well.
Originally it was dependent projects, but now I'm just not
sure what it is.

Any ideas on what these characters are, or how to delete
them? The project continues to intermittently crash.

The first thing I get when trying to open itis a pulldown
box which says:

"Using Resources"
"Show tasks using:"

It then lists all my resources. Clicking OK, Cancel, and
resource or the little 'x' on the upper right crashes the
project.

I can open it successfully when another project is also
open. Neither appear to be linked.
