Japanese Language Kit and Microsoft Word

I am using the Japanese Language Kit in OS 9 (10 dropped it so we can't
upgrade) and am having trouble with file corruption in Microsoft Word. I
don't know why it's happening, but sometimes when I open a file that was fine
the day before, the style has changed from normal to footnote style and I
wind up with one Japanese character per page.

I know this is probably a bit on the esoteric side, but it's driving me
crazy and I wonder if anyone out there has any experience with this?

WHOA!!! Japanese support in OS X - from Jaguar on and certainly in Tiger -
is umpteen times better than in OS 9! You must be "out of the loop" for a
very long time to think otherwise.

You do not have to install a separate Japanese Language Kit as in OS 9. You
just make sure that when you install OS X you do not exclude Japanese. OS X
has full Unicode support - that means far, far more Japanese and Chinese
characters than the old OS 9 "international Mac Japanese" ever did.

Then if you get Office 2004, you get full Unicode support there too, in all
the apps. Japanese is particularly well supported, once again.

You really need to upgrade. You've been missing out for several years now.

Sorry I can't help you there. Perhaps someone else can, but there aren't
many people left here still stuck in Classic.

Well, I live in a monastery so I may well be "out of the loop". However,
the Japanese Language Kit is resident in OS9; it is not an add-on kit as it
was in OS8. In addition, it is not simply a set of Unicode fonts; it is an
actual translation program where you can type the word in in Arabic
characters and the appropriate Japanese character will come up, along with a
menu of synonyms to choose from. So...

I actually have checked with Mac System 10 tech support and they admit that
the translation capability was dropped in 10 due to "lack of customer
interest". As I said, it's a pretty esoteric thing and not too many people
are likely to know about it.

I deeply appreciate your taking the time to respond and, if you think of
anything that might be of help, I'd be grateful to hear from you again.

I have some questions because I'm not sure I'm understanding
this correctly. Are you truly typing in Arabic and getting a
translation in Japanese, or did you mean to say that you're
typing in Romaji, which uses the same alphabet that I'm using
for this message? If you really meant Arabic, you may have to
try a newsgroup in either Japanese or Arabic to find someone who
can help with your problem. I don't imagine there are many
people reading an English newsgroup who are fluent in both
Japanese and Arabic as well.

If you instead meant to write that you were used to typing in
Romaji and then hitting the spacebar to get the Language Kit to
convert to Japanese (either hiragana, katakana or kanji,
depending on what was in the dictionary), then I believe you're
speaking of the Kotoeri input method. Kotoeri still exists in OS
X, and as Paul wrote before, the dictionaries for kanji are far
superior in OS X than were available in OS 9 or 8.

In addition to the continued Kotoeri input, vastly improved
dictionaries, and more fonts, you get the Character Palette that
displays more characters than the Keyboard Map (or whatever it
was called, I'm forgetting a bit).

If you're anywhere near someone with OS X that didn't do a
custom install to skip the Japanese support, you owe it to
yourself to test its Japanese capabilities.
