Japanese symbols gone . . .

There used to be Japanese kana symbols on my copy of
Microsoft Word under Insert->Symbols . . . but when I
went to use the symbols today, they were all gone. Can
anybody tell me what could've happened to these symbols
and how I can get them back?(!)
