Java Virtual Machine

Is there a difference between the one that used to be installed on XP Pro
and IE 6.0, and Sun's Java? Can I tell if I have one or the other installed
in the add/remove programs? I get messages when I visit some sites that say
to install it, but when I click on the link, it leads me to a no longer
operating MS site. Thanks.

Hi Jim,

There are actually two virtual machines. The MS virtual machine that MS had
to stop shipping and the Sun virtual machine.

SP 1 installs the JVM on XP.

Yes, there's a big difference between the Sun JVM and the MS JVM. Because of
the Java settlement, MS was forced into a role where they couldn't
distribute their own JVM with Windows anymore, and they couldn't develope a
new JVM or make changes to the current MS JVM. That leaves us with a garbage
JVM essentially. The Sun JVM is available at java.sun.com. XP SP 1 should
let you see the JVM as an optional component if it's installed, and give you
the choice to use the Sun JVM if it's installed. The Sun JVM should show up
on the add/remove programs list. If you don't have it, just go to
java.sun.com to download it and it will end up the default JVM.

Hope this helps,
