MS Access will not run - I received a message that jet engine 4.0 must be
installed.
In order to escape this confusing maze, you need to pay close attention to
the messages. The message doesn't tell you that you need to upgrade to Jet
4.0 SP-8. The message states the following:
"For the Medium and High security levels to function properly, your computer
must also be configured to block unsafe instructions. Blocking unsafe
instructions affects all users on this computer. Do you want to block unsafe
instructions?"
Between this message and the bottom of the window where you can point your
mouse cursor on the "Yes," "No" or "Help" buttons, the confusing roadblock
appears. The "Help" topic, which was written for Access 2002, is placed in
the text box below the message to help explain unsafe instructions and
sandbox mode. Access 2003 comes with Jet 4.0 SP-8, so you already have the
requisite file. Computers with Access 2002 did not have Jet 4.0 SP-8
installed originally, so the message about Jet 4.0 SP-8 being required for
blocking unsafe instructions applies to that version, not Access 2003.
Since you are trying to install the same version of Jet over the existing
file, you get the error message that a newer version is already installed on
your computer. In other words, don't bother with this futile task.
If you'd like to avoid the "Do you want to block unsafe instructions?"
message when opening any Access database with Access 2003, then set the macro
security level to "Low" before opening databases you've built yourself.
Change the macro security level to "Medium" or "High" before opening
databases that come from other sources. Install a digital certificate for
known sources so that you'll avoid the security messages when opening their
databases at these levels.
