Jet 4 Drivers and dBase III Access

I am currently supporting a client that uses an Access 97 application to
read and update information in a Dbase III database (which others use). The
user is getting a Runtime 2004 error message when attempting to execute
functions in the Access aplication. The error is happening on a macro that
updates the DBase III database (at least that is what the debugger is
showing). The user is on Windows XP SP2 and has Jet 4.0.8618.0.

I have Checked articles http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230125/ , and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114/ , but it appears the user has the
most recent version of Jet 4.0. I even tried the manual install to ensure
nothing was corrupted, and I received an error stating a more recent driver
was already installed. I cheched the dBase drivers on the PC and it is now
defaulting to dBase III (was dBase 5.0), but error still persists.

The most recent change to the PC was to install Access 2003, keeping the
install of Access 97 as well (this is needed until we can convert all of the
old Access applications). The installs were to 2 completely different
directories to ensure minimal conflict between the two versions. However,
since receiving this error message the user has completely uninstalled both
versions of Access and reinstalled Access 97 only. The error message is still
persisting.

Does anyone have any other ideas? It was mentioned to me that Jet 4.0
doesn't update Dbase III tables any more, however that doesn't seem to be
what Microsoft was saying in the above articles. It would seem to make sense
since the error didn't start until Access 2003 was installed, ,meaning it may
have update a driver or file. If it is true, is there a way uninstall Jet 4.0
and install Jet 3.51 on an XP machine? If so will the auto-update feature
just reinstall it?

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm afraid I don't have a solution to your problem, but I thought I should
let you know that researching JET 4 issues is unlikely to be of any help to
you, because Access 97 uses JET 3.51, not JET 4.0. Note that the two KB
articles you reference both refer to Access 2000, 2002, and 2003, not Access
97.

Doesn't XP default to Jet 4.0 drivers? Can I install the 3.51 and have it
default to them? Can Access 97 use the Jet 4.0 or does it have to be 3.51?

Access 97 uses JET 3.51. JET 4.0 co-exists with and does not replace JET
3.51. You have already installed JET 3.51 by installing Access 97.

Note that this assumes the service packs for Office 97 are installed. The
original, pre-service pack release of Access 97 used JET 3.50.

Bredan - Thanks for the info.

I'll double check the service pack on the Access install. This problem is
driving me nuts. So far it has worked twice since it started having issues.
This doesn't say driver to me, but I needed to be able to rule it out.

Thanks again.
