JPEG photos changing to red X

Hello,
After re-opening a document saved on the hard drive, all the jpegs had
disappeared and left large red X's in their place. Where did they go? How
can I prevent this from happening again? What can I do other than delete
and re-insert?
Thank you very much for any help - I am stumped and annoyed!
