JPEG shows as black box

I'm working in 2008, and when I insert a jpeg into a Word doc it shows up as a black box. I can place eps files without problem, but they seem to slow down the templates I'm creating. Somewhere else on the web there was a suggestion that this is a bug that's being worked on. Anyone know for sure?

Yes, it is a bug.

We thought it had already been worked on. There was a fix put out for it in
Word 2004, and again in Word 2008. You may care to check that you have all
the latest fixes to both your OS and to Office applied.

I seem to remember that QuickTime is involved in this bug: you may care to
check that your version of QuickTime is also up-to-date.

You will also find that the issue is sensitive to HOW you insert the
picture. If you drag-and-drop, you usually get poor results. If you use
Insert>Picture>From file... You will often get "better" results.

However: We have recently had several reports of this bug coming back. To
the best of my knowledge, Microsoft has not changed anything, so I wonder if
Apple has?

I do not think Microsoft is working on this: I suspect that whatever fix is
required will have been incorporated in the next version of the product.

Additional to John's insights the source of the JPEG may also be a factor -
imaged captured by a digital camera & uploaded as JPEGs without being
processed & saved by iPhoto, Photoshop, etc. can produce this.

Hi Macgirl,

I think it's a color space conflict. My guess is that your images
have a CMYK profile, and Word would prefer them to have an RGB
profile.

I just had the same problem, and I found this thread while googling
for a solution.. (When inserting jpegs in a MS Word 2004 document, I
got black boxes where the image should have been, regardless of
whether I dragged them into the document from the Finder, or whether I
used the "Insert > Picture>From File" command within Word.) After
reading CyberTaz's post above, it occurred to me that my original
images were Adobe Illustrator files, and even though I re-saved them
as jpegs, I didn't change their color space to RGB (typically used for
monitor viewing) from CMYK (for professional printing). I re-opened
the originals in Photoshop, changed the color space to RGB ("Mode >
RGB Color"), changed the image size, and then saved them as jpegs.
Word accepted them fine from there. I don't know if you have access
to Photoshop, but I hope this info at least gives you a possible
explanation.
