JPEGs How not to have them blown up to BitMaps

J

Jay Neilson

In Word 98 there was a LINK option that left pictures in
JPG format - (maybe that only deferred the space
problem...)

Word XP has no such LINK to JPG option, so all pictures
are converted from JPG to BITMAP.

I am writing a large book with lots of pictures,
preferably inserted at 200dpi print quality. Reducing to
72 dpi Web resolution will only defer the space abend
problem.

The book is now 30 meg, and is ABENDing on insufficient
memory. I have gigs of disk space and 250K of memory.

What to do??? Give up on Microsoft Word ???

Hi Jay,

Word 2002 (Office XP) does have a link option. Using Insert=>Picture=>From File choose the down arrow on the [Insert|v] button.
Word's internal default format wouldn't be bitmap but depending on some registry settings it can store 2 copies of the graphic in
the file. Using features such as 'allow fast saves' and File=>Properties=>Preview picture will also enlarge the file.

Word does have a limitation of the amount of 'text' in the document, but there can also be resource limitations from
graphics/objects that are computer bound. Is there a particular reason for the entire book to be in a single file rather than say,
in chapters?

For inserting the pictures, when not linked, you can use the setting in Tools=>Options=>General=>Web Options=>pictures for PPI,
provided that the JPEG itself doesn't have an internally stored value. Setting the value doesn't increase or decrease the density
of the graphic only the spacing of the pixels.
