JPG files

If I try and insert a photo file of jpg format word 97
comes up with the convert file box. How can I get word or
other programs to recognise jpg format files.

When you select insert file does the file type area of the
insert box have jpegs as one of its options? If it does
the problem may be with the jpg. Will anything else open
it? If so try saving it as a tif and insert that.
Irfanview is good for this if you have it (and there's a
free version you can download tho I don't know the website
but it should be easy enough to find)
