Jpg image quality outside of Publisher

I'm using a trial version of Publisher 2003 - trying to determine if it will
work for me to create various web graphics (headers, nav buttons, etc.) for
use in a hosting companies 'build it yourself' website tool/customizable
templates. The images look graphics look great in Publisher, but when I save
them as jpg or gif files and insert them into the design template, they
become very granular and pixelly. Will the Publisher with digital imaging
help this or is there something I'm missing? I'm not a programmer so the
'create html code yadayad' is not a solution for me!

Publisher is not an image editing program it's a dtp program to like put
stuff on paper.

Use Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or any one of the zillion image editors out
there to edit images....and creating graphics are another matter an possibly
another program. I use PS for images, Xara Xtreme for graphics (dumped
illustrator for Xara). MS is working on a program called Acrylic which is
pretty cool too.

Publisher is not really designed to create websites, although it can.

In addition to what Rob suggested, check out Xara MenuMaker and Web Style.
They are specifically designed for web graphics.

Francis,

The original poster was trying to create composite images in Publisher to
use outside of Publisher. If I understand you correctly you are inserting
images into your web publication, and are not happy with the pixilated
version in the web page.

You may resize and optimize images prior to inserting them into a Publisher
web publication in Photoshop or other image editor to the exact size you
want to use on the page at 96 dpi. After inserting the image select it >
Format > Picture > Size tab and make sure the Scale for height and width is
100%, and lock the aspect ratio.

Alternatively if you insert a higher resolution image into a page, or you
resize the image on the page to less than 100% scale, then use the Compress
graphics tool before you do a web page preview or publish your web files.
The Compress graphics tool will resample and resize the image to the size
you have on the page and produce a 96 dpi image. You can also do all the
images in the publication at once if you want.

Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages (2003):

Reference: Compress Pictures dialog box (2007):

If this does not solve your issues, please post a link to an example of and
image that you don't like. There is at least one other way of optimizing
your images, that involves importing the images into your web page rather
than inserting/embedding them, but it requires more work.
