I just got a brand new computer. I am trying to load my
Microfost Office 2000 Premium onto the new computer and I
am receiving error msg 1608 (there is no previous product
found), which is correct. Why can't I install this? I
have all the original CDs.

You are trying to install an Upgrade Copy of Office with no qualifying product
installed. See this article for details:

2000 or XP On the Selected Drive" Error Message When You Run Office 2003 Setup
When you try to install the upgrade version of any of the products that are
listed in the "Applies To" section at the beginning of this article, you may
receive the following error message: The product key you entered requires a

BJ---sounds like you have Office 2000 upgrade program disks. You need to
have the previous version disks that you upgraded from, for example; Office
97 or 95. When installing with the Office 2000 disk it will stop and tell
you it can't find the qualifing product, just remove the office 2000 disk
and insert the previous version and point to the drive location, then click
on Ok. It will then let you proceed, of course you'll need to reinsert the
Office 2000 disk after that, so it can proceed with the installation.

I hope this helps, congrats on the new computer!
