just installed, cannot type, greyed out menus

I just installed One Note Trial version. Have Office 2003, all updates, XP
Professional.

I cannot type in any window and the majority of the pull down menus are
greyed out. Even the options under the tools menus is greyed out.

I even tried to 'insert picture from file' and that was greyed out.

Any suggestions?
