Problem - KB 904942

When you use Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express to try to
log on to a HTTP-based mail server, such as Hotmail Plus,
authentication fails. This problem occurs when the following conditions
are true:
· The client computer that you use to try to log on to log on is
running Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7.0.

This KB provides a download patch to fix the authentication problem.

Customer Comment

I have two Outlook Email Profiles on my home PC. One is an Exchange
Server profile for work email. It includes the work email account via
the exchange server and Hotmail Plus via HTTP. The other is a POP3
profile for personal email with multiple POP3 accounts and Hotmail Plus
via HTTP.

KB 904942 ONLY works as a corrective patch if the primary email account
is an Outlook Exchange Server account. It does not work if the primary
account in the email profile is Hotmail or a POP3 account.

I still get authentication errors and failure to synchronize Hotmail
folders and download email messages on the Outlook Email Profile that
uses a POP3 account as the primary account AND which has NO exchange
server in the profile.

An interesting observation is that Windows Live Mail Desktop beta does
not product the same authentication errors for the POP3 profile
accounts. It works fine but it is a BETA product and is not suitable
for my home email at this time.
