KB908002 issues are hurting us bad.

David Thielen

The required KB908002 hotfix has 3 programs to run, one is a .exe
program. Many of our customers have security settings that allow
running .msi programs but not .exe programs. On Vista this is killer.

1) What is required to get Microsoft to make the 907417 one a msi.
Microsoft implemented strict security in Vista, Microsoft needs to
have their hotfixes follow their own rules. Not to sound harsh but
this is ridiculous that Microsoft has not fixed this yet.

2) Update all 3 hotfixes (see
http://www.windwardreports.com/office_hotfix.htm) to run correctly on
Vista (32, 64, & IA-64). All 3 of these think they need to run on
Vista 64-bit even if they don't need to - major problem. And the
office group should support Office running well on Vista.

3) Update the KB908002 bootstrapper to use the updated hotfixes.

4) Give us what we should look for (Vista 32, 64, & IA-64) to see if
the hotfixes need to run - so we can avoid even trying them if they
are unneeded.

I want to reiterate - this is hurting us very very badly. And if it's
not hurting other AddIn ISVs that use .NET, it will be very soon.

thanks - dave

Hello Dave,

I am very sorry for the inconvenience taken by the hotfix KB908002 in your
side.

I can see that it is a problem when the user's computer policy rules .exe
cannot be executed under his account. But in my opinion, there should be
some reasons why the product team choose the Self-Extracting Cabinet(.exe)
to deliver the kb907417 hotfix. I will be active to help on contacting the
product team to see if they can release a msi version in future. At the
same time, I would like to suggest also to consult the IT Professional
Support
Team(http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=718&SiteID=1
7) to see if there is any exception that can be made to let the limited
user run the Self-Extracting Cabinet file.

And as to your second concern, I have set up a Vista 32 environment with
Office 2003 installed and have a quick test. All of the three hotfixs,
extensibilityMSM.msi, lockbackRegKey.msi and
office2003-kb907417sfxcab-ENU.exe can be installed correctly. It does not
require the Vista 64. Am I missing something important to reproduce the
issue?
