Keep Added Custom Fields on New Projects

We are importing information from our bidding software. The export is
created in XML file. We know the custom fields that are created. How do I
make MS Project use the same "look" everytime? I want it to remember the
custom fields I created and use that as my default blank project. I don't
care about the tasks because those could be different every time. I just
want to be able to create each project with the same columns every time.

Create or update a view/table with the custom fields and layout you are
wanting. Then change the Tools-->Options--View tab to have the Default View
be that view. If on a project server you should create a global view/table
in the enterprise global.

I did update the Gantt chart which is the default view. But when I do a
File/Open it doesn't use this view. We do not have Project Server.

I found these instructions on line. Can someone please tell me if there are
dangers to appending a project into a template?

•Select menu File > Save As… In the Save as Type field select *.mpt. Give
the template a name and save it.
•This template file can now be distributed.
•In the simplest case people can open the template via the File > Open menu
and then load the exported RMC file afterwards using File > Open again. When
prompted to either create a new project, append or merge select to Append.

There should be no dangers of appending a project into a template. Once it
is appended though, save as a project not a template.
Keep the items in the template as necessary as possible - don't load it up
with too much or people will get confused.
