keep getting norm.dot in use

closing word v2000 keeps getting "this file is in use by another
application or user, (C:\windows\.....\templates\normal.dot)" OK
But there is NO other application running while word is opened and I'm
only one on computer.

Then is displays "Changes have been made that affect the global
template, normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?" YES, NO
CANCEL

to my knowledge I did nothing to the template; was in a new document.
click no and this always happens in word. how to correct? TIA.

Farthest thing from an expert, but;
Have you tried locating the Normal.dot and renaming it to Normal.old?
(do this with Word shutdown).
When you fire up Word this will cause it to create a new Normal.dot.
If this corrects the problem then you probably have a corrupted original
Normal.dot.
Note that any customizations made in the original Normal.Dot will be
lost.
If the problem persists then it's not with the Normal.Dot so you can
delete the new Normal.Dot and rename the original back to Normal.dot.

I never suggested that it was crashing. The link merely happens to be what I
called the web page that contains the likely solution to your problem. Did
you look at it?

If you mean the link (/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm) YES, I looked
at it. Are you aware if you preform and "CTRL-F" (find) on the web
page to find "normal.dot" there is NOTHING. Looking at all images does
show a normal.dot with the tilde in front of it. I clean my HD and
those are not on it. The links at the top went to galleries and
non-related issues. So, tell me, what was I suppose to see?

The orphaned temporary files this page refers to are only visible when you
set Explorer to display hidden files - which is explained in the tutorial.
Orphaned temp files are the likely cause of your problems. You need to
ensure that any remaining are eliminated before attempting to further debug
your problem.

There is no reference to normal.dot on that page, because that page is not
about normal.dot, it's about orphaned temporary files.

Although the new Normal.dot that Word generates will not include your
customizations, they are not "lost" provided you have renamed (rather than
deleted) Normal.dot; many customizations (styles, macros, AutoText entries,
custom toolbars) can be retrieved using the Organizer. Toolbar and menu
customizations and shortcut keys cannot be retrieved and must be rebuilt
from scratch.

I keep Explorer to display hidden files always and as stated keep HD
clean (removal of *.bak, *.tmp and ~*.* files) and defraged regularly.

What's next?
BTW, by not keeping all the quoted text as below, people who may have
same problem might find it hard to follow along or what is being
debugged.

The only thing I can think of now is that normal.dot may be corrupt. Close
Word. Rename normal.dot to oldnormal.dot then restart Word.

Have you tried looking for global templates/add-ins?

To determine if you are using any global templates go to
Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of your Startup
folders. The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder can be
found in the Office installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins. COM are added via the
Registry rather than the Startup folders. To determine whether or not
you are using COM Add-In you can add the "COM Add-in" command to your
toolbar:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

Hi I have exactly the same problem, as at the top of this thread.

I have emptied the Windows/Temp folder except for about a dozen bit
and pieces that "cannot be deleted".

1. What do I do about them?

2. Can somebody translate what Beth (above) said about "COM add-ins
into English and finish it.

I've done what she said but it gets you absolutely nowhere ...except
new button.

How does that say whether you have some in the system and/or what to d
about it????????
I'm tempted to say that she shows perfect Microsoft training.
