keep inserted graphics from vanishing off page

When I insert bimaps, I often find that they can "vanish" off the page, often
with seemingly trivial changes to the document, which do NOT include deleting
the paragraph with the anchor. Is there a way to prevent this, or at least
force display of all visible graphics ?
