"Keep with next"

I'm using Word 2002, and have built into my style
headings "keep with next." It is not working. Any
ideas? I can't have a heading at the bottom of the page
by itself. I do have a 6 pt space after the heading -
does that make a difference? I tried with a 0, and it
still didn't work.

Thanks.

If by "6 pt space" you mean that the heading has 6 pts Space After, then
this should not be a problem, but if you're creating space by using a blank
line (empty paragraph) after the heading, then that's the problem: the
heading is staying with the empty paragraph, but the empty paragraph, unless
it is also formatted as "Keep with next," is not staying with the text
paragraph after it. This is just one of several reasons why it is advisable
to use Space After rather than an empty paragraph to add space between
paragraphs.

If you have used Space After and are still having a problem, it could be
that all the subsequent paragraphs are also "Keep with next," in which case
they will keep chasing each other, causing unpredictable results.
