Keep With Next

Does anyone have a macro (or other suggestions) which would automatically do the following:

Word Menu > Format > Paragraph > Line and Page Breaks > Keep Lines Together / Keep with Next?

Is there a way to do this quickly rather than drilling down through all the menus?

Thanks,
AK

Macros aren't supported in 2008, but that isn't the solution in the first
place :) Just like any other type of formatting Line & Page Breaks
attributes should be included in Styles. When you apply the appropriate
Style to a paragraph it will take on the designated formatting.

If you aren't familiar with the use of Styles - as opposed to Direct
formatting - it would be a good idea to look them up in Word Help. If you're
at all serious about your documents & their (as well as *your*) sanity it's
well worth the time to learn how to format documents properly... Word is a
Styles-based program. There's plenty more about them from numerous resources
so let us know when you're ready :)

You can assign keystrokes to each of the items in the Lines & Page Breaks
dialog, but IMHO the time would be better spent learning about Styles - you
can always assign keystrokes later.

Hello Phillip -

I'm not sure hat the point of your reply is - The OP knows where the feature
is and apparently knows how to use it, the request was for a faster way to
apply it rather than having to navigate the menus.

More importantly, this is utterly incorrect:
once you set this.
all documents after setting this are affected.

Those attributes are all *paragraph formatting features* and apply to
selected paragraphs *only* - NONE of those settings affect other documents
in any way [unless you make the settings in a template].

Going to commit the Cardinal Sin,
and show a picture.

If I am not mistaken I believe
this same menu in Word 2004 is also in 2008

and should address your problem.

You get to this menu from format menu > Paragraph

Widow and orphan control mean that if you end up
having part of a line breaking to another page that
whole paragraph moves to the next page.

once you set this.
all documents after setting this are affected.

Taz I got that menu picture from Word 2004 in which I just opened up a
Blank document.

Your forgetting once you make a changes unless you tell word *not* to
save changes in normal it will stay put. I didn't go to the menu and
make the required changes. I had done that Years ago.

As long as you save changes to normal it permanent until you change them
again and save those changes to normal. Now I haven't tried then 2008 I
may do so to see what happens and I prefer that way.

No, Phillip, I'm forgetting nothing :)

As indicated in what I wrote, if you actually open the Normal (or any other)
template & change the settings in *it* then Yes, those settings do become
the default. Or, If you modify the Normal Paragraph Style by changing those
attributes & save the change in Normal they become the default.

However, just changing the settings for any given paragraph in any given
document does *not* - cannot - change the default settings.

Yes. I set properties such as keep with next and keep together in styles.

For example: All my heading styles have both. Most of my body text styles
have Keep Together.

Consequently I rarely have to think about these properties, because my
normal formatting styles contain them set correctly. "Not having to even
think about them" easily fulfils my definition of "quick and easy" :)

However, there are those 'exceptions' :) For these, I put them on a
toolbar as buttons.

If you pop into View>Customise Toolbars... And look in the Format select of
the Commands tab, you will find all four of them: "Para Keep Lines
Together", Para Keep With Next" , etc. Simply drag them to a toolbar (or
assign a keystroke to them).

Like a motorcycle, Word is built to be improved. If you don't have a copy
of Clive Huggan's book Bend Word to Your Will, download it here:

Hope this helps

John and Bob - thanks very much. I will certainly head over to customize the toolbar!

And Bob, you are correct - I am not really familiar with Styles - but obviously - I should be!

Thanks again!
