I have recently switched to Word from my trusty WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS.
In writing book manuscripts in WP, I used master documents to keep the
individual chapters in the proper sequence. I realize that the master
document component in Word is not reliable and will therefore now keep the
chapters as separate individual document files within a project
sub-directory.
However this still presents a nuisance problem. Since I do not write the
chapters in what will ultimately be the final correct sequence order (these
are not novels), it often occurs that I will write chapters to be added
between previously written or partially written chapters. I therefore cannot
assign final chapter numbers till the entire manuscript is finished. IN WP
5.1, the master document feature served the purpose of allowing me to
maintain the chapters in the sequence I wanted them to appear in the book
even though they were not yet assigned chapter numbers during the creative
process and were not in alphabetical order. Is there a trick someone has
found to achieve a similar sequence order in Word documents without using
master documents?
Thank you.
