When I attempted to save a newly typed document in Word 2003,the letters
appearing under the "file name" didn't match what I was typing. This error
repeated itself in all new document windows. Just now without further action,
it stopped. What caused this?

It looks like you accidentally applied a different keyboard layout. If you
could tell us what letters appeared when you typed other letters, someone
could probably tell you which layout. This is a Windows rather than a Word
program. There are shortcut keys in Windows to switch layouts if you have
them installed.
