Keyboard not responding in Word & Excel 97

E

Elisabeth

Hello, We are running Office 97 SR1 under Windows 2000
version 5 on an IBM NetVista (single user).

We've had many viruses recently, cleaned up with Norton
Antivirus. After installing Quickbooks and running Norton
Antivirus (which found 10 viruses), the keyboard no longer
works in either Word or Excel, though it works in all
other applications.

In Word, we can use Home/End, Page Up/Down, and the INS
key even turns on and off the insert mode. But when we
type any letters or numbers, there is no response in Word
or Excel, though I do see disk access. I can cut and
paste, but not type any new text.

Any clues, anyone? Help!

Have you checked the online help resources on IBM's website to help you with
your keyboard problem? Its possible they might have some sort of hardware
update relating to keyboards, its always best to check with the manufacturer
of the hardware.

This probably won't help much but this question was asked before and
responded to as follows;

It's been reported that there is a virus that causes this.

My Word program (Office XP) won't type. I can save, print, cut and
paste,
and cursor blinks. I can't type letters or get any use out my keys. I
installed a Word 97 as well, and it does the same thing. I can do all
this
on other applications, like the internet, so it's not my keyboard. Any
ideas
will be appreciated.

I would assume that there may still be a virus resident (or at least the
remnants of one!).

This is further to my previous (not too helpful) response and the
following are quotes found in other messages in this ng using (in OE6)
"Find->Message in this Folder" -"keyboard" .

Have you activated your copy of Word and PictureIt? Check under the Help
menu. If there is a command there about "Activate" try it. If you have a
version that doesn't require activation there won't be such a command.
If
you have already activated, it will tell you that.

I was having the same and I found a trojan virus on my computer. To get
rid of it I went to this web
sitehttp://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.tof
ger.html I followed the instructions near the bottom and it all
started working fine again.

Give it a shot and hopefully it will work for you too.

According to Office MVP Beth Melton, "Past reports have confirmed this as
the PWSteal.Tarno.B virus."
