Keyboard shortcut

im trying to customize my keyboard to include the section symbol but i keep getting the message "Word cannot change the function of the specified key." I've tried about a billion combinations about half of which are unassigned and i still cant get this to work. what am i dong wrong

You could just use the standard default keystroke: Option+6

If you have a need to use something other than that I would suspect that
you're going through the Tools> Customize... dialog, which appears to be
broken for modifying stroke assignments for Symbols. Instead, go to Insert>
Symbol, select (normal text) from the list, then click on the § symbol & hit
the Keyboard Shortcut button to assign your keystroke.
